Why should I go to Caucus Night?
Community Caucus Night is your chance to make the Democratic Party in Weber County more organized and more responsive to voters. Caucus Night is where we connect county party leadership with the people of Weber County. There’s a thirst for change at the grassroots level and this is where that change begins. We’ll be electing Precinct Officers and County Delegates, crucial grassroots organizers who will help us change the political landscape in Weber County and beyond.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s a Precinct?
A precinct is basically your neighborhood. It is the smallest political organizing unit in the state (approximately 1,250 voters per precinct). Precincts vary in size as population determines the boundaries. Precincts ensure that everyone in that neighborhood is voting in the same races, and that no precinct straddles multiple political districts (e.g., school board districts, or city Council wards, etc.) Precincts make up House Districts which determine your representatives in the State legislature.
What’s a Precinct Captain?
Precinct Captains work closely with our House District Chairs on direct community outreach, connecting with your neighbors to build an informed and active group of Democratic voters. Working in partnership with the House District Chair, the Precinct Captain is the front line organizer for candidates and the party. Within their voting precinct, responsibilities include outreach to registered voters; facilitating voter registration and absentee ballot access; enhance get out the vote outreach efforts; distribute campaign and party literature; promote the party; be a conduit for feedback on the party to the County and State Party leadership; and addressing voter concerns. Precinct Officers are elected at Caucus Night to serve until the next Caucus Night (typically a two year term). Precinct officers also server on the County Central Committee (CC). The CC acts as an oversight board for the Weber County Democratic Party Executive Committee (EC). The EC is the leadership team for the county party. Precinct Officers also act as County Delegates, which allows them to vote at County Convention on who will represent the Democratic Party in state and local elections.
What’s a House District (HD)?
A Utah House District represents about 40,000 to 50,000 people and is typically made up of 15 to 25 precincts grouped together. Your HD determines who you vote for and who represents you in the Utah State legislature.
What’s an HD Chair?
HD Chairs work to connect candidates and party officials with the people in their districts. They work closely with precinct captains to organize voter outreach efforts, educate and inform, and promote the democratic party in their district. HD Chairs are elected at the County Organizing Convention, held every two years.
What is a party Delegate?
Weber County has 300 delegates. That number is determined by the state party (OR???). Each precinct is entitled to one County Delegate, to be filled by that precinct’s Chair. The remaining County Delegates are proportionally allocated to the State House Districts. County Delegates vote for candidates running within their county and vote for state delegates at the County and State Nominating conventions, held in even numbered years. Anyone who attends Caucus Night that is a registered voter in the precinct, may nominate other attendees, or themselves, to become precinct officer or delegate.
