Convention Recap: What Saturday Means for Weber County Democrats

Saturday was a major milestone as we head into fall midterms, as both the Utah Democratic Party and the Utah Republican Party held their 2026 state nominating conventions. Here's what you, as a Weber County Democrat, need to know about what happened.
Congressional Race: CD-2
Weber County is part of Utah's 2nd Congressional District, which stretches across northern Utah. Peter Crosby won the Democratic nomination at convention with a strong 76.5% of delegate votes, earning a direct path to the November general election ballot with no Democratic primary.
Our incumbent congressman, Rep. Blake Moore, had a difficult Saturday on the Republican side: state Rep. Karianne Lisonbee of Clearfield won the GOP convention with 61.5% of delegate votes to Moore's 33.7%. Because Moore collected enough signatures beforehand, he stays on the June 23 primary ballot and will face Lisonbee in a Republican intraparty fight. The outcome of that race determines who our nominee faces in November.

State Senate Race: SD-5
Senate District 5 spans Weber County and parts of neighboring counties, so its Democratic nomination was decided at the state convention on Saturday. This is an open seat, as incumbent Sen. Ann Millner (R) is retiring. Both Democratic candidates, CJ (Christina) Hernandez and Dakota Wurth, competed at convention but neither secured enough delegate support to win the nomination outright. Both advance to a June 23 Democratic primary, where Weber County voters will choose their nominee.
On the Republican side, former state Rep. Jill Koford of Clearfield — who retired from the Utah House specifically to run for this Senate seat — is the Republican convention nominee heading directly to November.
Weber County Democrats: your SD-5 primary vote on June 23 matters. This is a contested open seat and you will be choosing our nominee. Get to know CJ Hernandez and Dakota Wurth before June 23.

A Quick Note on CD-1
The race getting most of the statewide headlines is the newly drawn 1st Congressional District — a competitive Salt Lake County-centered district that Democrats are expected to win. Progressive newcomer Liban Mohamed narrowly won the Democratic convention, and four Democrats head to a June 23 primary: Mohamed, former Congressman Ben McAdams, Sen. Nate Blouin, and Michael Farrell. Weber County voters are not in CD-1 — for full coverage, check the Salt Lake Tribune or Utah News Dispatch.
